What is Tokyo's CPI inflation rate?
Data through September 2026Consumer prices in Tokyo's 23 wards were 2.7% higher in September 2026 than a year earlier, on the Tokyo ward-area Consumer Price Index (all items), the advance reading the Statistics Bureau of Japan publishes about three weeks ahead of the national index.
That compares with 1.9% in August 2026. Core CPI (all items less fresh food) was 2.7% and core-core CPI (less fresh food and energy) was 3.0%.

Definition
The Statistics Bureau of Japan publishes a preliminary Consumer Price Index for the 23 wards of Tokyo at the end of the month it covers, about three weeks before the national index. It is the first official reading of Japanese inflation for each month and is widely read as a guide to the national figure, which follows a similar path.
The rate quoted is the headline index, all items, compared with the same month a year earlier, with core (less fresh food) and core-core (less fresh food and energy) beside it. Same base (2025 = 100) and same definitions as the national index. The preliminary reading is revised once, when the final Tokyo figure is published with the national release.
Rates are calculated from the published index levels and can differ from the Bureau's published rate by up to 0.1 percentage points; the method is stated under Show calculation.
