54.0 million (53,974,770) guest nights were spent in Japanese lodging in July 2026, on the Japan Tourism Agency's Accommodation Survey, all facility types, Japanese and foreign guests together.

The survey changed its sampling from January 2026, so a comparison with a year earlier is not on the same basis and is not made here.

Definition

A guest night is one guest staying one night. The Japan Tourism Agency's Accommodation Survey counts them every month across hotels, inns and other lodging in Japan, Japanese and foreign guests together, and publishes a preliminary figure about a month after the month ends, revised later.

The survey's coverage and estimation changed from January 2026; readings before and after that point are not on exactly the same basis, and the data page states the break. The comparison with a year earlier is calculated from the published counts.
