Definition
Gross domestic product (GDP) is the value of everything produced in the economy in a quarter. Japan's Cabinet Office publishes a first preliminary estimate about six to seven weeks after the quarter ends and a second about a month later, and revises the series again at each annual revision.
The rate quoted is real GDP, seasonally adjusted, at chained 2020 prices, expressed as the change on the previous quarter compounded to an annual rate — the convention the Cabinet Office headlines. The change on the same quarter a year earlier is given beside it.
Estimates are revised, sometimes by a full percentage point. This platform keeps every release it has collected, so the figure as first published can be read back through the API with an as-of date.
