The Bank of Japan's holdings of Japanese government bonds stood at ¥504.0 trillion at the end of September 2026, on the Bank of Japan's published accounts (the JGB line).

Down ¥15.9 trillion from August 2026 and down ¥51.0 trillion (−9.2%) from a year earlier. The peak was ¥597.5 trillion in November 2023.

Definition

The Bank of Japan publishes its balance sheet in its accounts, and the figure here is the line for Japanese government bonds (JGBs) at each month-end, in hundreds of millions of yen as published; the sentence above converts it to trillions.

The Bank's JGB holdings grew from 2013 under quantitative and qualitative easing, when it bought bonds at a pace that made it the largest single holder. Purchases were reduced from 2024, and the stock now falls as bonds mature faster than they are replaced. The distance from the peak is stated above.
